So.
Here I am.
A member of the Conservative Party of Canada.
A financial supporter, donating funds to the party.
A member of the P.C. Party of Alberta.
And, as a Conservative, I nonetheless suggest that the prorogue of Parliament, while not perhaps the most critical issue before the Canadian public, was, nonetheless, a bad idea. That it suggests an unwillingness for our government to answer questions they don't deem "important" enough or "worthy" of debate.
My point being that the hallmark of democracy is the right of those who disagree with us, to engage in vigorous debate, even when we find their objections "unworthy".
And.. as I express this opinion, I suppose in my way suggesting a conservative "mea culpa", what sort of response to I get - from non-Conservatives?
Mostly, what I get is more argument and criticism not only of Conservatives, but of my own opinions.
This is truly politics for dummies. There are those out there, no matter what you say, if you are not "one of them", your opinions are worthless. Even when you agree with them.
Is there anything more symptomatic of what is truly wrong with politics and political discourse, than those who are so simple, so bereft of an operating intellect, so truly twisted by some xenophobic hatred of those who differ from them, that they can't even accept when you are agreeing with them?
And here's the irony.
The typical expression of hatred for conservatives is that they are "intollerant".
Funny, that, isn't it?

Guess the answer is to never agree with 'them',
but continue to disagree with your own.
I was surprised PMSH prorogued so early, rather than say, now.
But there is a reason we will not likely know, until PMSH writes his memoirs,
and we find out the CPC got wind of some 'proceedural trick' the Opps were going to use for something anti-Con or coalition-ish....
I agree with Wilson, there's just too much we don't know going on behind the scenes by the Opps. Given their intense hatred of Harper, I wouldn't be surprised if they used an open Parliament to again accuse Harper of war crimes, maybe trot out another guy like Colvin to back their case. Do they care about how Canada looks while we are hosting the Olympics ? No.
But my take is that Harper is looking out for his MPs and Ministers. He has given 10 Ministers new portfolios, so they can use the time to get up to speed. Plus he's given fresh mandate letters to ALL his Ministers (probably asking them to look for cost cuts).
And I'm sure Flaherty can use another 5 weeks to let more economic data come out, so that he is better informed, and can fine-tune his budget better.
Further to that ... sometimes I wish Harper would communicate MORE about what he's doing and why. But I understand that he likes to play his cards close to his chest, not give the Opps much to work with, and will often spring surprises on them.
Three years ago, CPAC did a great one hour documentary on Harper, where a bunch of people who know him give some great insights. Too bad that documentary is not online.
The key insight, by Deborah Grey, is that he thinks strategy all the time.
"intolerant"? The Right? We're the guys that go to war with the left. Nazis, Islamists, Shining Path, Hamas and I could go on and on.
The Socialists or the Left, what ever you prefer are the ones that kill their own. Of course they do it for the good of the STATE.
All he had to do was take a few minutes of news time to explain that the process has been used many times by the Libs, that work will go on, that legislation will can be reintroduced. "Everything is normal, folks, please return to your seats."
