Boxing fans might recall the date, November 25, 1980. On that day, what was billed as a "superfight" between Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran took place.
The fight was anything but super.
Leonard toyed with Duran for 8 rounds, until, frustrated and embarrassed, Duran turned his back on Leonard, and said to the referee, "No mas" (no more). The fight ended then and there. And while Duran claimed he had stomach cramps - his manager, Carlos Eleta, said "He quit because he was embarrassed."
Today, it is reported that David Swann will look to the Alberta electorate, turn his back, and say to his party, "No mas".
At a time where the former juggernaut PC Party is crumbling in disarray, it's leader announcing his own resignation, it's Finance Minister refusing to put his name to the budget and resigning his post - the Liberal party continues to be beaten like a rented mule, and bruised and battered, it's leader is throwing in the towel.
While the PC Party is suffering its most significant criticism since the election of Peter Lougheed, one expected the Liberal party would rise to the fill the gap. Sadly, under Swann, it has done anything but.
In fact, they lost even more ground, losing one MLA (Dave Taylor) to the Alberta Party, while watching the upstart Wild Rose Alliance under Danielle Smith rise steadily in the polls until it is now in a virtual tie with the once vaunted "PC Machine".
It might fairly be said that in announcing his resignation, Swann is making the first and perhaps only insightful decision of his brief leadership.
I'm sure somewhere today Dave Taylor is using great restraint in keeping his "I told you so's" to himself.
P.S.: OOPS!!

So you are saying this will be his Swann song?
Lol.. I can't believe I missed that in making my post ;)
Not to worry, you made up for it with "beaten like a rented mule".
That's a good one!
