Et Tu Warren?
Hmmm.
Interesting stuff of late from Warren Kinsella.
The so-called, "modern-day Machiavelli" Liberal "mastermind" has penned a column suggesting that the Conservatives are on pace to win a majority government.
To be sure, he doesn't suggest that he believes this is a good idea, and doesn't even actually state THAT he believes that the Conservatives are going to win a majority, but he does write:
Last Tuesday, one of Canada's most respected pollsters, Ipsos Reid, stunned political Ottawa with the news that Harper's Tories were favoured by 43% of Canadians--placing them an astonishing 16 points ahead of the Liberals. The survey found the NDP doing even worse, dropping five points from a previous Ipsos poll to a pitiful 13%.Well said, Warren.
If you looked at a batch of other pollster offerings, the Ipsos numbers weren't totally out of whack. The trendlines have certainly been heading that way, Bev Oda's lies notwithstanding. And, if Ipsos is right, Harper's party is slouching towards a comfortable majority--with the Grits maybe even losing official opposition status to the Bloc.
But, color me suspicious. I mean, if Kinsella is a "Machiavellian" mastermind, that suggests an ulterior motive to his missive.
I mean, he uses a quote describing him as "Machiavellian" as a tag line to his own blog.
"Machiavellian".. being or acting in accordance with the principles of government analyzed in Machiavelli's The Prince, in which political expediency is placed above morality and the use of craft and deceit to maintain the authority and carry out the policies of a ruler is described.
Lovely. So very.. very.. well, "Liberal". Doing what it takes.
So. One assumes that Warren has a goal in mind, some "political expediency" that he is seeking to accomplish.
Is this his way of "shocking the electorate" - giving them a scare? "The Harper majority is imminent.. to arms, to arms!"
Perhaps.
More likely, it's Warren's efforts to shoot a lame horse.
Check out his blog on March 1, where he writes:
Why isn't anyone asking for Michael Ignatieff's resignation? Now - he goes on to write that there are valid reasons not to contest Ignatieff's leadership, many of which are slightly defeatist in themselves, but clearly, Kinsella has come to grips with the reality that the "natural governing party" of Canada is no more under Michael Ignatieff.
I mean, it's not like they wouldn't have just cause. In federal Grit land, things continue to go from bad to worse.
The Liberal Party's fundraising is a shadow of its former self, with the Conservatives routinely raking in $5 for every two received by the Grits. Many rank-and-file Libs despair of their party's policies --this year, with Ignatieffoilsands are an instrument of national unity.
Kinsella, no doubt, has grown weary with the minority King Stephen Harper.. soon to be in the top 10 of Canada's longest serving Prime Ministers, somehow having shown the political acumen to retain power in a minority position for over 5 years.
Kinsella, no doubt, sees Ignatieff as an accident just waiting to happen. A leader leading the party to nowhere.
Warren, no longer a close Liberal insider, has chosen to help hasten the inevitable end of Ignatieff's reign - no doubt, to try and recapture the heady days gone by when Warren was relevant. When he was the ultimate Liberal insider.
Beware, Michael, the ides of March are upon you.
Clearly, Warren comes not to praise Michael, but to bury him.
