Freedom.. built to last?
Be wary, fellow conservatives.
After years of toiling in the trenches, amid years and decades of Liberal destruction of Canada, now that Stephen Harper has achieved his elusive majority, Canada and Conservatives are at risk.
At risk of destruction by Conservatives ourselves.
Most conservatives, I believe, have an abiding faith in the concept of freedom - true freedom.
Not some co-opted Utopian vision of freedom where as long as you do everything the government tells you to do, we will all be happy - that is the liberal social-engineering model.
And a conservative - a TRUE conservative would never abide that, would they?
They wouldn't take away the power of a free and open judiciary and, instead, create a statist regime where all decisions are the stuff of statutory direction, would they?
They wouldn't suggest, for a moment, that the secret to a safe society is an empowered police state where privacy becomes a thing of the past, where police can arrest and spy on the citizenry at will, all in the name of some suggested "perfect society" where we are all safe - and if we aren't hiding anything, why worry?
That couldn't be considered a "conservative" agenda, could it?
Surely, after enduring a never-ending parade of Liberal social-engineering projects, in a noble, but ignorant and misguided effort at creating Canatopia we couldn't possibly be so ignorant as to embark upon the same misguided and ignorant effort as Conservatives, could we?
I fear we are.
And it's not, contrary to what Liberals would suggest, some "secret agenda" or devious effort to hurt society - it's for the exact same (some might say "noble") reasons that the Liberals introduced the Gun Registry and that Ontario introduced universal daycare.
To make things better.
To achieve their vision of utopia.
And - sadly - if we are not careful, and do not exhibit some modicum of hubris - we, as conservatives, will fall into the same trap. Taking the reigns of government, and assuming that now having power, we ought to exercise it.
To make laws to make things better - by exerting greater control by the state over the individual.
But - and here's the thing of it - as Conservatives we should be ashamed.
The Liberals never denied their goals, their philosophy - that by the study of social relationships, they believe they can modify human behavior through a combination of forced education and coercion to make society, well, "perfect". So, then - for a Liberal to engage in social engineering is expected.
What to make of Conservatives doing the same thing?
And worse, this past week, what to make of people involved with the conservatives undertaking misleading phone-calling efforts to lie to electors hoping to achieve electoral victory through subterfuge and deceit.
As Conservatives, not only should we not seek to defend that apparent effort to undermine free democracy, we should root it out, and seek to make an example of the staffer - and if it comes to it - the MP or MP's who were aware of the effort.
Because no only does it undermine our party - it undermines free democracy.
We cannot allow the Conservative Party of Canada to creep into some ugly version of Nixon Republicanism where the "ends justify the means".
If we are going to have regard to the American experience, I might suggest going back a little farther into the Republican family tree to Abraham Lincoln. Imagine that - a Republican, a conservative, who fought for freedom and liberty of all people.
And who understood, intimately, that the enemy which ultimately posed a risk to western freedom did not come without - it came, potentially, from within.
As Lincoln stated in his Lyceum Address:
At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide. Our most fearsome enemy isn't Al Quaeda, it isn't some army of child pornographers, it isn't the drug cartels - it's US. It is the misguided idea that freedom should be bartered away for safety. That dirty political dealings, whether Conservative phone-dialing scams, or Liberal ad-scams, are justified to give us power to "do good". That if we build enough jails and pass strong enough sentences, we'll be safer. That if we just take away guns, there will be no more murder. That if we allow the state to take care of our children, we will have no racism, no sexism, no hate. That if we ban all drinking and driving there will be no traffic accidents causing injury and death. That if we just pass enough laws and give the state enough control.. we'll be happier.
Pretty arrogant and pretty simple-minded.
Liberals can't help themselves.
But as Conservatives, we should know better.

Bravo...I have no problem with Libertarian conservatives, true conservatives, not the orwellian types that we have now.
Want to cut social programs? Okay...there's a valid argument to be made, but then also cut corporate welfare too.
Glad to see some Cons not caught up in the cult of personality that the PMO seems to want.
Wow, talk about being over dramatic. You sound like the lil Turd.
Not sure I understand the jist of your post. Sounds like you're throwing in the towel and there is yet to be any definitive proof that the Conservatives have anything to do with this.
What are you, some kind of a Joe Clark/David Frum Conservative in name only? Pleasing your enemies does not make them your friends.
Your screed reminds me of this:

Point well taken. I think Harper should be ruthless, and punish the culprits. I know he can, he has done it before.
There is no question that some conservative volunteer engaged in some bullshit. My point is, simply, that we don't allow a party to lose its way to become just a control-freak animal from the other side of the political spectrum.
So.. Take a look at some things going on and ask yourself if this is really what you want.
I'm tired of assholes doing stupid crap "for mt own good" and sending me the bill for it.
Here, here, SFL; I'm a fiscal conservative, but my choices in politics are increasing being narrowed down to which party is going to steal FEWER of my freedoms. The LIEberals will happily steal them for their vision of utopia, just as many conservatives will gladly steal others for THEIR vision of utopia, an dif I don't have someone to vote FOR, there's not much point in supporting either one of these cabals. There was some obvious shenanigans going on here, just as there was in sponsorship and in Mclellan's riding signing up voters with nothing more than a bus station as an address, but if the party wants me to believe that this was nothing more than a rogue partisan, they're going to have to wash out some laundry in public.
Thanks SDC.. My point exactly.
We have to wean Canadians, conservative and liberal, from the idea that government is the answer for everything..
We also cannot rule out the liberals doing it to themselves. One blog entry had Bob Rae loyalists as possible culprits. They had access to the liberal lists. They wanted Ignatieff to go. Now Bob Rae, as Captain Canada, has come to the rescue.
PM Harper has to go up against the Harper Hating Opposer's,the Harper Hating Media, and now some of his supporter's.These Harper Hater's are always going to be with us.Now if I was Prime Minister Harper I'd run one more time, and then have a convention and hopefully elect Jason Kenney as the leader,as I believe he would be a great PM,and he won't be very gentle to the Opposer's,media included.
This faux scandal should be named “Wafer Chase 2012” and the real threat to Conservatism is that the weak-kneed get all wobbly when the same lying media crew concoct another Big Lie, just like the last Big Lie and the one before that.
How can anyone believe anything that these despicable liars say! They have a history of doing this sort of thing.
And then we have liberal characters like Gord from UK with his vapid "Bravo" screed.
He seems to think that he's the "Go-to-Guy" on who is and who isn't a conservative.
Orwellian indeed!
Then there's the ridiculousness about Cons being caught up in the "cult of personality".
Someone’s "caught up" Gord. You might want to engage in some introspection.
Crash.
We need the Conservative party to be stronger - not weaker.
And if there is substance to this allegation (and it appears with recent admissions there is SOME substance) we need to, as a party, root it out and kill it.
There's no election in the offing.
No need to fear the Liberal crowd's criticism - but a failure to properly grapple with isues like this will definitely hurt the party.
Oh.
And as you may have noted - my blog is less about the issue relating to the robo-dialer and more about assuring that conservative supporters hold their own party, their own Prime Minister and their own MP to a higher standard.
Color me bad for such a blasphemous suggestion.
One last thing, “The Theft of Democracy” !?!
You got be effin kidding me!
It was the Lib/NDP/Bloc who tried to engineer a coup against the duly and legally elected government and it was the very same media dogs who did everything they could to normalize it in the publics mind.
It was also the Liberals who have allowed the Theft of Democracy by being willing dupes and toadies to the Government and Corporate powers who have installed the last two leaders of the Liberal Party. And again, it was the filthy Toronto scum bag media who deflect attention away from this real threat to Democracy.
Sure, if true, it was wrong.
But your post here seems to be running with the wild pack of Toronto media jackals who have their own agenda , and it sure ain’t the truth.
Enough said, It’s back to salt mine for me.
Looks like you drank the MSM cool aid.

My thoughts exactly (except if not the Liberals, then the NDP).
This is way, way too convenient. What kind of political strategist would formulate a plan that is not only almost guaranteed to fail, but guaranteed to *get you caught* doing it even if you did somehow miraculously pull it off and steal enough votes to win?
(which isn't even close to being true, from what I've read so far)
I can see this from one or two misguided, overzealous young campaign workers, maybe...but that's not what has happened here according to the Opposition parties (and news media). This was "organized" and "widespread", which implies at least several people were involved. Where would you find that many people with the resources, knowledge and determination to get this done without at least one or two of them possessing a modicum of common sense? Where do you find that many stupid people willing to engage in an illegal action of dubious value which puts them at great risk of being caught whether it works or not, especially if the poll numbers show you are already poised to win government anyway?
Can't wait for more details on this....
Doesn't add up, sorry. I'm thinking it's a setup
