I'm apparently irritating a few fellow conservatives by questioning the party that I hold a card with, the party that I donate to, and the party that I vote for.
Alberta Girl, today, took some issue with my suggestion that the Prime Minister wasn't taking the high ground on this "robo-gate" fiasco... and finished her thoughts with this:
This witch hunt is bad enough coming from the opps and media. I am frustrated to see it coming from supposed supporters."Witch hunt"? Because I suggested the Prime Minister was over-reaching in Commons today, essentially guaranteeing that the problem didn't arise from any conduct of the Conservative party?
The suggestion, I suppose, is that we should be circling the wagons.
Interesting expression, that... "circling the wagons".
I've always thought about that simply in the sense of commencing a defensive posture.
But the usage of this idiom as described in the Cambridge Dictionary of American Idioms is perhaps more instructive:
...to stop communicating with people not in your group to avoid their ideas or beliefs
"Americans are feeling it is an especially good time to spend time with family, to circle the wagons."Is this what we want in times of some stress?
To avoid ideas or beliefs that aren't "like ours".
Well. I'd prefer to keep an open mind, myself. I like to consider myself free to examine the evidence on my own terms, and to come to my own opinions, unshackled by what some might see as an obligation to drink the party kool-aid.
Maybe the whole fiasco is over-blown. But there seems to be at least some substance, based upon the reports that I can see, suggesting at least some deluded supporter thought he or she was helping the party.
I would like to know more.
I'm fascinated by what the truth of this matter might be - as whoever it was, Conservative, Liberal, NDP or otherwise, I think I would like to see them put in jail for a while to understand just how offensive it is to attempt to distort the election process in my country.
But I guess that puts me outside the circle.
Oh well.
Que sera sera.

Um The witch hunt comment was directed towards the media, opposition and the legions of Harper Haters out there who are running with scissors trying with all their might to cut down thw CPC. It was not directed to you
It is frustrating to hear and read the misinformation and as a 7 days a week volunteer on this past campaign, it also gets personal.
I can't speak for other volunteers but I'd go out on a limb and guarantee that 99.9% of them had NO dirty tricks up their sleeves.
For example, my campaign signs on my lawn were damaged by teenagers. I happened to be looking out my window when it occurred but that sort of thing could happen anywhere in this country and all we heard from the Bubble media was the suggestion of dirty tricks when it occurred in Ontario and Quebec riding's.
Are we more rational and calm out here in the West because we have learned how to be humble by not be the centre of the universe? I'd say we are.
the other thing I want to say is that I also worked the polling station and there were certainly signs of EC glitches but you know, instead of acting all high and mighty, calm communication fixed the challenges.
there is just something that stinks with this whole story and when a guy like the PM who has worked his butt off for this country is slandered (only in the house), some of us get defensive.
There were a ton of challenges but if there was something illegal done by our party, it will be a rouge volunteer or we are being slandered.
Actually I read the witch hunt comment as the media/opposition witch hunt.
I think Canadians are doing the same thing with this issue as they did with all the other fake-gates, ignoring it. Remember the fable of the boy who cried wolf? That's the opposition/media.
After thinking about your latest post, I have come back to apologize if you thought I was chastising you for not supporting the CPC. i realized it was your opinion and you, just like me are entitled to it. I thought I was being careful not to lump you in with the hysterical, giddy left. If I did, I am sorry.
As Bec said, I am so tired of constantly fighting, apologizing and watching my party continually being harrassed by the so called progressives in this country. I am sure Stephen Harper is Sick of the continual lies that are printed and reported about the CPC. He has much more restraint than either of the opp
Ya, I am pretty tired of this. There has been a constant barrage of attacks, innuendo, complaints of laws broken or stretched etc. etc. etc.
This has become the boy who cried wolf. I have been quite willing to sit this one out and wait for some facts before I really even pay attention.
It is part of the lefts alinskyite game plan to overwhelm us while using thei tactics against us.
Not circling the wagons but letting them waste their ammo.
I told my 39 years of age son today that I got a call from the LPC,and they said they were calling for the LPC,and they asked me if I would vote for them, and I immediately said no I wouldn't,as I wouldn't even think of it,and she said ok,and hung up.I didn't think there was anything wrong with the call, but on Prime Time Politics tonight on CPAC with Peter Van Duesan,Rae told Duesan in answer to one of Duesan's questions that the LPC doesn't call Conservative voter's,as we only call Liberal voter's.I've been a Harper Conservative since day 1,and have been supporting the party all along.I've never received a call from the LBC before until then.I'm in New Brunswick and John Williamson is my MP.John won the riding when Greg Thompson(Veteran's Affairs Minister)retired. This riding has been conservative going back many years. It's a large riding, and the conservative's always win it by at least 10,000-15,000 votes over the liberals. So it doesn't make sense why the LPC would call me,knowing I was a conservative, unless it was because Mr. Thompson had just retired, and thought they could defeat Mr. Williamson.
I still don't see an issue with this if people aren't smart enought to check there Voters card to let them know where they vote at then they don't deserve to vote. this sham of robogate thing is just rediculus. all they have to do is phone the number at the time on there elections canada card which is on there and they can get all the info there. I had a call from a conservative head quarters in vancouver wanting me to get out and vote ant the person mp isn't even in my riding. how ever the one in my riding sunshine coast did win. and I was thrilled.
Roy is dead on with an issue that I brought up @ BLY earlier this AM.
The phone lists have not adapted to technology imo. People move from district to district, city to city and in some cases are able to keep their land lines and most certainly can keep their cell phone #'s.
AS a Conservative volunteer, I had people that HAD lived in the riding but no longer did.
In fact our info rather that being the sophisticated info that some are suggesting us capable of, was not. In fact NO PARTY can keep up with technology to the degree that adapts to people moving their domicile, political affiliation etc.
To think that "Jane Doe" from Guelph was isolated to harass is an asinine theory!
But don't stop now Opps and Media Party.....just think about your stupid theory for a second!
Bec, I remember in Edmonton the NDP supporters getting all upset because the new Conservative candidate was using Rahim's old sign list. NDP voters were going wild over a simple error made by a new candidate. They took down any signs that were not wanted.
People move, and believe it or not, they change parties. The opposition/media are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
If someone did anything illegal, they should be punished, but not a whole party, and that is what the opposition are doing. Convicting Conservatives on nothing. It's disgusting and childish. PM Harper should continue to demand evidence be sent to EC and the RCMP, and stay above the mud slinging.
THAT Conservative candidate (Ryan Hastman) is likely one of the most honorable young men on this planet.
The "lists" were derived from the previous election (residents) + we worked off of a donor + previous volunteer list.
If any of the idiots that are making these accusations remember, this election, it WAS NOT ON THE RADAR of Conservatives. WE were caught with our pants down imo.......unlike the OPPS who imo orchestrated it despite the ill health of Jack Layton (talk about opportunism!!!)
So seriously, for Conservatives to do anything other than what Conservatives do, volunteer enthusiastically is simply not a real assessment from these media people who think the worst of us.
The main point is PM Harper wants the opposition to put up or shut up.If they have any proof lets see it.The same goes for Conservative supporters.Even to insinuate that someone did something wrong adds fuel to the fire.Where is the proof that someone did something wrong in the Conservative camp.WHERE IS THE PROOF??ANY PROOF??EVEN ONE SMALL PROOF???ANYTHING??I didn't think so just a repeat of the BS that the opposition has been regurgitating. So why help them with comments like maybe someone,or perhaps one volunteer,or I heard from someone about something..Just comment or write blogs about this piece of shit witch hunt if you have some proof, otherwise ,yes circle the wagons and attack the opposition and especially the MSM.
The opposition has a different story when outside the house than in the house. To me Peter Van Duesan is the best journalist. He really put the questions to Rae on Prime Time Politics last night.Rae was white faced, and his rabbit impersonation was really showing.
